Reading
Writing about a person, place, or topic you have little to no experience with can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. As a sensitivity reader, I can provide a scholarly and humanistic perspective on a range of topics you may be writing about. Even if you are a part of the group you are writing about, I can guarantee your project would benefit from an additional perspective, from someone who has lived and/or professional credentials.
As a proofreader, an alpha reader, or a manuscript reviewer, I can fix grammar and syntax, and assess the enjoyment and structure of your piece before sending it off to a publisher or publishing it yourself. Perhaps all your prose needs is one more set of eyes to get through that last edit before finished, or you simply need someone to check how well the story fits in with genre and storytelling conventions. Either way, my thoroughness and attention-to-detail will be a great asset during the revision process.
What kind of reading do I need?
Sensitivity readers provide feedback on topics including but not limited to gender, race/ethnicity, religion, culture, history, location, and profession. While your story may not be lacking in respectability or imagination, I can elevate the authenticity and depth of your story with my own feedback. I have professional and lived experience with a range of topics listed below, and I am committed to adopting a flexible and multicultural view when evaluating other writers’ work. Here is a list of topics I am most comfortable being a sensitivity reader for.
Alpha readers act as a “test audience” who can provide feedback on the experience of reading your written project. Like a beta reader, I can assess genre-specific tropes, the fulfillment of expectations, and the enjoyment derived from the reading experience. As an alpha reader, I provide all of the above as well as how I would write the same concept from the perspective of a writer. As a writer who values genre subversion and representation, my services are intertwined to account for both.
Proofreaders check textual consistency, formatting, and last-minute grammar such as punctuation, spelling, and typos. No matter how good your editorial team is, we are all prone to errors that may linger when the final product has a tight deadline and requires multiple edits. Fine-tune your published material by hiring a proofreader who can catch those errors before they’re permanent.
Manuscript review assesses the overall viability of your completed project. In MS review, I go over each section and the project as a whole to discuss how well it accomplished its goals (i.e., entertainment, persuasion, or education), how relevant and unique your ideas are, and how clearly you communicated these ideas. MS review can be the first or last step in revising your project before sending it off to a publisher.
