Editing

Why hire an editor?

Writers often need help understanding their project from an outside perspective. Usually, this is by bouncing off ideas with someone else. As a writer with over 15 years of experience, I will orient you to best communicate yourself in your next draft. Writing is all about connecting with your audience; without an audience, your work will not make the impact you hope to achieve. If you aren’t sure whether you’ve resonated with your audience, that’s where my developmental editing and copyediting skills come in.

For finicky editorial work like editing your academic sources in a book or article, I can help you complete the edits you may be less knowledgeable about or don’t have time to. I have experience with academic works, fiction, and nonfiction. I love helping authors rework their narrative or thesis until it conveys what they truly want. My editorial skill set also spans the technical aspects of editing, such as academic citations, colloquialisms, and connotations.

What kind of editing do I need?

Developmental editing (DE) assesses your plot or argument development. I will offer feedback and suggestions for overarching edits to help you clarify your goals and make your writing more effective. DE and CE often overlap, so you may find you need both for the best outcome.

Copyediting (CE) reviews syntax, grammar, and textual flow to make your writing more legible to your audience. More than that, a copyeditor will review tone, writing style, and word connotations. Without a copyeditor, your readers may have difficulty understanding your message, or they may take the wrong message from your work.

Bibliography or citation editing focuses solely on organizing your project’s sources. This may be in source references, in-text citations, and endnotes in a variety of citation styles. Some of my citation style specialties include Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS or CMS), American Psychological Association (APA), and Modern Language Association (MLA). I also have experience with American Medical Association (AMA) and Turbian citation style.
