Editing
Why hire an editor?
Writers often need help understanding their project from an outside perspective. Usually, this is by bouncing off ideas with someone else. I will orient you to best communicate yourself in the next draft, since writing is all about connecting with your audience. Without an audience, your work will not make the impact you hope to achieve. That’s where my editing services come in.
For finicky editorial work like editing your academic sources in a book or article, making your work more accessible for a general audience, and for English grammar and syntax, I can help you complete the edits you may be less knowledgeable about or don’t have time to. I have experience with academic works, long and short form text, fiction and nonfiction. I love helping authors rework their narrative or thesis until it conveys what they truly want, and my editorial skill set spans the broad and narrow aspects of editing, such as developmental editing, line-editing, copyediting, and academic citations editing.
What kind of editing do I need?
Developmental editing (DE) assesses your overall plot or argument effectiveness. I will offer feedback and suggestions for overarching edits via comments to help you clarify your goals and make your writing more effective. Since DE focuses on a project’s “big picture,” it often overlaps with line-editing and CE work. You may find you need both for the best outcome.
Line-editing involves going through your project sentence-by-sentence to ensure the flow, tone, and style of your text is effective and consistent. Line-editing breaks down your text to focus more on the meat rather than the bones of your project, ensuring word choice and connotations match up with your larger goals. Without a line editor, your readers may take the wrong message from your work.
Copyediting (CE) reviews syntax and grammar to make your writing more legible to your audience. More than that, a copyeditor will review internal consistency of uncommon terms and connotations, but it won’t touch upon “big picture” goals like in DE and line-editing. Without a copyeditor, your readers may have difficulty understanding your message.
Citation style editing focuses on organizing your project’s sources. This may be in a bibliogaphy, a reference list, in-text citations, footnotes, or endnotes in a variety of citation styles. Some of my citation style specialties include Chicago Manual of Style (CMS), American Psychological Association (APA), and Modern Language Association (MLA). I also have experience with American Medical Association (AMA) and Turbian citation style.
